Does anyone have parameters that they follow for fitness to serve requirements or have an age limit for volunteers (young or old)?

We have an age requirement of 16 to volunteer.  As far as fitness goes, we have a service description of every volunteer position we have.  It will state "must lift ___ lbs" or "averages 10k steps" so it is clear on expectations.   Hope this helps.

We have a minimum age of 15, with minimum of 18 a requirement for a few placements. As far as "fitness to serve" we've had some very capable 80+ volunteers and others we've had to retire primarily due to memory issues. We don't have a specific policy around it but know that our responsibility is to the safety and care of everyone who comes through our doors. We've also had cases when we've reassigned a younger (under 80) volunteer because they weren't able to perform the duties of a role - not so much physically but more "you have to stay at the welcome desk during your shift and can't just hang out in the coffee kiosk or wander around at will" sort of stuff.

minimum age 18 years old.  No cap for age.

All volunteers are required to complete a health assessment with our Employee Health office as part of onboarding.  The EH nurse will identify the category for the volunteer.  Category (1,2,3 - see attached) the category was incorporated into the position description when I began this process (approx 2018) at the direction of HR VP.  The Categories were pulled from our HR job descriptions.  I selected the category to assign to the job description based on duties in the position profile.  I document their category in their personnel record. A position is selected based on category assignment.

    Hi Jane:

This is an interesting question, and something that came across my desk last week. Under 18 yrs must be accompanied by a chaperone at all times.  We do get interest from elderly but when they realize walking is a big part it can be a deterrent. For the few I'll find an area for them - be it playing cards; watching a movie; washing dishes; etc.

I truly believe when a person wants to volunteer they should. All people are deservant and valuable - to turn away someone who could have an impact another isn't indictive of my profession.  Elizabeth :)
