Parking lot pick up service

    Does anyone have a parking lot pick up service? If so, do you use a regular van/car or side by side? Any input for starting this service up?

    We tried a parking lot pickup service several years ago using an extended electric golf cart. Several reasons why this was discontinued: a golf cart does not do well during wet and cold weather, could not use it the next day when someone forgot to plug it in overnight, had problems fully staffing volunteer drivers. My suggestion if you do this service would be to invest in a vehicle that can be used in all weather conditions and has all of the safety features found on an automobile.

    Maury Regional started a shuttle service in 2003 that operates Monday thru Friday, 7:30am-2:30pm (7:30am-4:30pm prior to COVID). We transport approximately 27,000 patients, visitors and/or staff around our campus annually in a care-a-van. We are currently operating with two 2015 Nissan Quest vans that we rotate on a monthly basis. Van #1 they drive on odd months and Van #2 they drive on even months. The auxiliary purchased both vans for the hospital. We currently have 16 drivers (3 women), and most drive a regular shift each month, with a couple that like the freedom of simply 'filling in.' I have attached a photo of the van and am more than happy to share anything else such as policy, service description, etc.

    had many of the same issues as Greg.  We had an oversized electric golf car with canvas zip down sides for the rainy / cold weather (we are in SC) Had to plug in for 45 minutes mid day.   Most of the volunteer drivers were men who truly enjoyed it (I used my social butterflies).  it did become an issue with not being able to staff it; hence, security took it over and they have  a dedicated very friendly officer who runs the service 7 am - 3 pm M-F.  If you need position description / education information I'm sure I can locate it and happy to share vs having to reinvent the wheel.

    Cindy, and this group is all volunteers? Do they have a phone they carry for emergencies? That was a big issue when we wanted to start up this program at our hospital. It was going to be on an electric golf cart (which I agree with everyone's replies) but Risk halted it because we had no way for volunteers to call for emergencies without using their personal cell phones.  Also, do you have special libility for them?

    Yes, we have a care-a-van 'hands-free' cell phone the drivers use. Emergency numbers, along with other dept. numbers are programmed in. When someone needs a pick-up, they call the care-a-van number which is posted on the light poles in the parking lot. We also have business cards in all of our service areas and entrances for individuals to pick up. Drivers are covered under the hospital liability plan as long as they are driving on 'hospital campus' and/or approved routes. 

    We have trainings every 6 months, including Columbia Fire Dept. that trains them on the fire extinguishers that are placed in each van. In fact, our drivers have more training than some of our other departments that drive hospital owned vehicles!
