Do any of you use a Wheelchair Mover to assist when transporting larger visitors? Our ambassadors are struggling with transporting some of the visitors entering our facility, so we are looking for some way to resolve this issue and keep the volunteers safe! Customer service is so important, but the safety of our volunteers is a priority.

    Thank you!

Cindy,  We do have electric wheelchairs, but do not have volunteers utilize.  I have a weight limit of 250 lbs for a volunteer transport which staff try to adhere to otherwise paid staff are called to assist on the transport.  always trying to keep the volunteers safe.

We utilize the wheelchair mover.  My volunteers absolutely love it.   We don't just use it because of weight, but our campus is so large and the hallways between buildings are carpeted.   It helps the volunteer not get so fatigued from the pushing.   i would highly recommend having one.   We also installed taller handles for pushing so the volunteers aren't bent over pushing.

Hello can you give me vendor information on the larger handles and the wheelchair mover. We could really use these.

We bought Tollos for the wheelchair mover.  They all look quite similar.   The handles are from Medline.   They are called handle extenders.  We use the ones that the handles point up.   It allows the volunteers to "lean" into the push instead of using their back.

We advise volunteers that if an occupied wheelchair is too heavy to push from a comfortable stand (ie push with just hands/arms), then they have to request a staff member trained in safe patient handling to assist. If the volunteer would have to lean into the chair to move it, it's too heavy for a volunteer.
