We were asked to post this for a member wishing to stay anonymous so hopefully you are able to help them...

Our hospital Auxiliary has a history of finding it very difficult to get people to step into leadership positions. The COVID outbreak did nothing to help us with that. Although we are trying desperately to keep our Auxiliary together, I fear that we may have to move to a volunteer based system. Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you!

Many groups in our state are moving to an "Advisory Council." That is what I am currently working toward. There is nothing in our hospital bylaws that state we must have a formal board. Our volunteers have voted in favor of this. They don't want to serve on a board anyway! I'm hoping this will make it easier to recruit as well.

We changed our by- laws about 4 years ago to incorporate volunteers and Auxiliary as one and the same. Then immediately started involving all new volunteers into luncheons, fundraisers and educating about the board and board members. This year we have the largest number of new board members and they are all excited to bring new ideas. We worked hard on creating board positions with Chair and Vice chair so they could share the work load and hopefully each member steps up into the role above them at the next election.
I think it’s important to identify what about serving on a board they think is too difficult or too much work and then tackle those issues. Also the board we had 3 years ago was tired and negative. Their attitudes were effecting us in getting seasoned volunteers to step up. So we began looking at new folks, assessing their strengths and realizing that it may take more work with them in the beginning but it will make a stronger board later on. So in addition to by- law changes 4 years ago we tackled them again last year and totally restricted the board, board positions and duties. We held board training sessions with the new people taking office and provided detailed instructions books of their duties. The work is already paying off. I’m so proud of the group that has stepped up and they feel empowered to bring new ideas and to oversee their business.
