Student Volunteers/Observing and shadowing

We have separate pathways for students to volunteer and to observe/shadow but I am being asked to consider providing a more immersive experience for students who volunteer (both high school and college). I am struggling with the boundaries of what volunteers can do versus observing/shadowing opportunities.  Do any of you incorporate more immersive (think observing surgeries, shadowing physicians while volunteering) activities for students or do you adhere strictly to the more traditional volunteer roles for students?  Any advice or experience with this is appreciated.

Our students who wish to shadow/observe a licensed professional must obtain a verbal agreement with that individual and then contact the Medical Staff office who provide the necessary paperwork, etc. for the experience which is generally a day or two.

Interns go through our HR department

Clinicals are handled through Nursing / Radiology

all volunteer opportunities are "non clinical".

Our process is similar to Carol's. Each department that accepts students for shadowing is responsible for managing the acceptance of those students based on capacity, partnerships with local schools, etc. The minimum age for shadowing is 18. Students may shadow for 1 day, unless they are working toward a specific degree and are in need of observation hours. We have a standard orientation that all students must complete, and the coordinator in each department is responsible for ensuring this is done.

I only bring in students for true volunteering.

We manage both programs out of our office.  Volunteers are long-term and go through full-onboarding process; it may include some shadowing/observation experience, but they also have a role to help support.  Shadows are short-term (just a day or two) and have a different, shorter on-boarding process; it is exclusively observation only.

I am in the process of doing something similar because they are not allowing the Juniors back at this time.  Do you mind sharing with me the name of your program? And if you have any policies or job descriptions, I'd like those as well if possible.

    Thanks in advance!
